The mission of Sankofa International, Inc. (Sankofa) is to enhance the quality of life for needy Africans, this includes health care. Most needy Africans have never been serviced by a doctor or dentist due to poverty. Therefore, many die prematurely.
In 2002, in partnership with the Komfo Anoyke Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana, Sankofa began conducting medical exams on needy teachers and students in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. To date, over five hundred examinations have been completed and prescription medication has been purchased for over 250 patients.
Vision Testing
Most children and
adults have poor vision due to environment and poverty. Sankofa has covered
the cost to test the vision of the students and teachers at the village
school, with the support of Ghana's Komfo Anoyke Teaching Hospital. Such
exams will be conducted annually.
Prescription Medication
57 of the students
and teachers examined required prescription medication. 10 of the students
and teachers required either prescriptions with 6 month follow-ups or
more extensive exams. Sankofa covered the cost for the medication. This
program will be conducted annually.
